The Four Options for Recording Final Grades in Ugla
When a teacher records a final grade in Ugla, a drop-down list appears with four options:
- Grading scale from 0.0 to 10
- Passed without a grade
- Failed without a grade
- Absent
See the explanation of each option below.
1. Grading scale from 0.0 to 10
When a student passes a course with the minimum passing grade, either 5.0 or 6.0, Ugla is programmed to display the status Pass in the average grade field.
When a student does not pass the course, with a grade of 4.5 or lower, Ugla is programmed to display the status Fail with grade.
A grade should be given if a student submits part of the assessment in a course based entirely on coursework, or if the student does not pass the assessment despite submitting all assignments.
A grade should also be given if a student does not pass the final exam in a course where a minimum grade of 5.0 or 6.0 is required in the final exam before other assessment components are included in the final grade. In that case, only the exam grade should be recorded.
2. Pass without a grade
If the course assessment is graded as pass/fail and the student passes the course, select Pass without a grade.
3. Fail without a grade
If the course assessment is graded as pass/fail and the student does not pass the course, select Fail without a grade.
In exceptional cases, Fail without a grade may also be recorded when a student has passed the final exam and the teacher allows late submission of an assignment.
4. Absent
If a student does not attend the final exam, select Absent.
According to University of Iceland regulations, a student who does not attend an exam and does not submit a medical certificate fails the course. The student cannot register independently in Ugla for a resit exam, but must instead register again for the course the next time it is taught.
A student who is registered in a course but submits no assignments and takes no exams should also be recorded as Absent.
