Grades and Feedback

Check your grades

Open your course and select Grades in the course menu to see your scores, submission status, and any comments or rubric results that have been made available. You can sort the page by due date, module, assignment name, or assignment group. In some courses, parts of the grade view, such as the total grade, may be hidden.

Understand what the Grades page shows

The Grades page does not always show a number right away. An icon may mean that you submitted the work but it has not been graded yet. The status labels are also useful: Missing means nothing was submitted by the due date, and Late means the work was submitted after the due date. If an item appears in gray text, it has been dropped from the calculation and does not count toward your total score.

Look for feedback, not just the score

It is important to check the feedback, not only the grade. To see feedback, open Grades, click the assignment title, and then view the Submission Details page. There you may find written comments, attached files, rubric results, media comments, or annotations in your submitted document. From the Grades page, Canvas also notes that you can use the Feedback icon to open Submission Details when additional feedback is available.

Reply to feedback

On the Submission Details page, you can add a comment to your submission. Depending on the assignment, you may also be able to attach a file, add emojis, or record or upload a media comment. This can also be used in group assignments. Safari does not support recording media comments, so Canvas recommends Chrome or Firefox for that feature.

Use What-If Grades carefully

What-If Grades lets you enter a test score to see how it could affect your total grade. This is useful for planning, but it is only your own estimate and not an official result. You can remove the test score at any time and return to your actual grade

View grades from past courses

If you still have access to a past course, open Courses in Global Navigation, select All Courses, choose the course under Past Enrollments, and then open Grades.
