Canvas Studio Interface

Canvas Studio

Both students and teachers can access Canvas Studio as part of Canvas. It makes it easy for teachers to share video or audio with students in a course, and for students to submit video as part of an assignment. When Studio media is embedded in a course, the media itself remains in Studio and is played from there.

Note: Studio works well for short recordings. For longer videos, Panopto is usually the better option

Examples of what you can do in Studio

Teachers can use Studio to record a welcome message or a short course introduction, add narration to slides, create short how-to videos, save YouTube or Vimeo videos in their Studio library, add quiz questions at specific points in a video, and record presentations. Studio also supports screen recording, webcam recording, audio recording, and picture-in-picture recording.

More about what Studio can do

A link to Studio is available from the Canvas global navigation menu. Users can also access Studio through the Rich Content Editor, so teachers and students can insert Studio media when editing pages, discussions, announcements, assignment descriptions, and other course content.

  • My Library
Each user has a personal media area in Studio called My Library. This is where their own media is stored, and it can also include media added from YouTube or Vimeo.
  • Recording video
Studio can record your screen, your webcam, audio only, or your screen and webcam at the same time.
  • Editing media
Studio includes a built-in media editor for simple editing tasks such as trimming or cutting media. It also supports captions and annotations.
  • Students can submit video
Students also have access to Studio. They can record and submit video or audio as part of an assignment. Teachers can then use SpeedGrader to assess the submission and provide feedback, including comments directly on the media timeline, as well as a rubric, grade, and general feedback.
  • Media discussions
Each Studio video can include a discussion area. Students and teachers can comment on the video, and comments can be linked to specific points in the timeline. These comments appear both in the video and in the discussion below it.
  • Quiz questions in video
Teachers can add quiz questions at specific points in a Studio video. When the video is played, it pauses at those points so students can answer. Studio quiz results can also be posted to the Canvas Gradebook.
  • Analytics
Studio provides viewing data that helps teachers see how students interact with media. This includes usage metrics, completion data, interactive graphs, and viewer-level information. Teachers can use these insights to review how media is being used and improve their course materials.
