About Panopto

With Panopto, teachers can record lectures, shorter screen recordings, and presentations. Panopto is easy to use, and recordings can be viewed in most web browsers and on mobile devices.

  • When a recording is started from within a Canvas course, it automatically appears under the Panopto Video link in the course navigation menu.
  • Recordings are published on the Panopto server in an area connected to the course and specifically designed to store and play this type of content.
  • Panopto can also be used for live streaming. This allows students at home to follow the teaching in real time.

Do not publish recordings in the course files area.

Setup on classroom computers

Panopto is installed on most classroom computers at the University of Iceland. It is recommended to use Panopto when recording teaching sessions.

How long are recordings stored in Panopto?

Recordings in courses that have not been viewed for 13 months are moved to archive storage on the Panopto server. To play content that has been archived, use Restore from Archive.

Recordings that no one has viewed for 3 years are deleted.

If recordings must not end up in the recycling bin, action needs to be taken:

  • Download the recording and store it in a safe place.
  • Copy or move the recording to the My Folder folder on the Panopto server. Recordings in that folder are not deleted or archived.
