Inspera Exams

Publishing Inspera Grades in Canvas

To publish grades from an Inspera exam in Canvas, you must create an assignment in Canvas (not a quiz). Creating the assignment also creates a column in the course gradebook, which will receive the grades from the Inspera exam. During the transfer of grades from Inspera to Canvas, via Ugla, the teacher is shown a list of the assignments created in the relevant Canvas course. The teacher then selects the assignment that should receive the Inspera grades.

Set Up an Assignment for Importing Inspera Grades

To transfer grades from Inspera to Canvas, you need to create an assignment in Canvas, not a quiz. The purpose of the assignment is simply to receive the grades from Inspera.

In the assignment settings, select the following:

  • Set the assignment to 10 points if the grade should use a 0–10 scale.

  • Under Submission Type, select No Submission, since students are not submitting anything in Canvas in this case.

  • For the Due date, use the exam date and time so the exam appears correctly in the course calendar. The other availability dates should not be set.

The assignment must be saved and published for students to see the exam in the calendar. Grades do not appear automatically to students. After the grades have been transferred to Canvas, the teacher must post them separately.

Make-up and Deferred Exams

To keep it clear in the gradebook which students took a make-up or deferred exam, it is best to create a separate assignment for those grades. For example, the easiest option is often to duplicate the original assignment and change its name. To duplicate an assignment, go to Assignments in the course menu, open the three-dot menu at the end of the assignment row, and select Duplicate (see screenshot below).

For gradebook calculations, it is recommended to assign this assignment only to the students who are taking the make-up or deferred exam. This is done in the assignment settings under Assign to. It can be done either before the grades are transferred from Inspera or afterwards. This ensures that the gradebook calculations correctly reflect that the other students are not expected to take the make-up or deferred exam.

In the main exam assignment, students who take the make-up or deferred exam should be marked as Excused.
