Creating a FeedbackFruits Activity in Canvas

FeedbackFruits logo

There are two different ways to create a FeedbackFruits activity in Canvas, and they differ in how grades are handled.

Method 1
The activity gets a column in the gradebook, and grades are automatically transferred there. This allows the activity to be included in the final grade.

Method 2
Grades appear only inside the activity itself, if grading is used. Choose this method if the activity should not count toward the final grade.

Creating a FeedbackFruits activity – Method 1

The activity gets a column in the course gradebook, and it can be weighted in the final grade.

  1. Go to Assignments in the course navigation menu on the left.
  2. Click the three-dot menu in the top right corner (next to the + Assignment button) and choose FeedbackFruits.

  3. Select the tool you want to use. There are several ways to do this, for example:
    1. My Library: Create from a FeedbackFruits template you have previously saved.
    2. Past activities: Create from an activity you have previously created.
    3. Start from scratch: Choose a FeedbackFruits tool and create the activity from scratch.

  4. Give the activity a title and enter something in the description field.
At this stage, it is recommended to fill in only what is necessary to save the activity (do not finish selecting all settings yet). What must be filled in before saving depends somewhat on which tool you selected.
  5. Save (if saving is not possible, some required information must still be entered).
The FeedbackFruits activity is created within, or linked to, a regular Canvas assignment. That is why it gets a column in the gradebook.
  6. Set the points (maximum grade) on the Canvas side, that is, by going to Edit Assignment Settings.
  7. Save.
  8. Review the FeedbackFruits instructions for the FeedbackFruits tool you are using, go to Edit, and finish setting up the activity, for example, by entering the assignment description, choosing dates, and selecting the appropriate settings.
Note that it is recommended not to use Canvas-side settings (i.e., settings in the Canvas assignment) to avoid conflicts between the systems.
  9. Save.

Note!
When a FeedbackFruits activity is created this way, it is linked to a regular Canvas assignment. Set all dates and deadlines in FeedbackFruits rather than in Canvas. Dates set in Canvas can interfere with the FeedbackFruits activity and may close actions that students still need to complete. FeedbackFruits dates appear in the course calendar.

Creating a FeedbackFruits activity – Method 2

The activity becomes a link within a module/week, and its grades appear only within the activity itself (if grades are used). It does not appear under Assignments and does not get a column in the gradebook.

  1. Click the three-dot menu in the top right corner (next to the + Module button) or the three-dot menu for the relevant module and choose FeedbackFruits.

  2. Select the tool you want to use. There are several ways to do this, for example:

    1. My Library: Create from a FeedbackFruits template you have previously saved.

    2. Previous activities: Create from an activity you have previously created.

    3. Start from scratch: Choose a FeedbackFruits tool and create the activity from scratch.

  3. Give the FeedbackFruits activity a title and enter something in the description. What needs to be filled in at this stage depends on the tool you selected and the information it requires to work. It may be enough to enter just a single word. It is best to fill in only what is necessary to save.

  4. Save (if saving is not possible, some additional information still needs to be filled in).

  5. Click Add item.

  6. Review the FeedbackFruits instructions for the FeedbackFruits tool you are using, go to Edit, and finish setting up the activity, for example, by entering the activity’s description, choosing dates, and selecting the appropriate settings.
Note that it is recommended not to use Canvas-side settings (i.e., settings in the Canvas assignment) to avoid conflicts between the systems.

  7. Save.
