The Teams Meeting Environment

Participate in meetings

This Microsoft guide explains the main controls available during a Teams meeting. It shows how to use meeting chat, view participants, raise your hand, react, change your view, manage camera and microphone settings, share content, and leave the meeting. It is useful for anyone new to Teams or looking for a quick overview of the meeting interface.

A few tips

  • It is recommended that you restart the computer you will be using before the meeting.
  • A wired internet connection is better than a wireless connection.
  • Before starting an online meeting, it is useful to close anything you do not intend to show during the meeting and open anything you plan to use so it is ready.
  • If you are hosting a Teams meeting for the first time, it is a good idea to start a test meeting beforehand to become familiar with the environment and try out the features you plan to use.
  • If the meeting will be recorded, participants must be informed in advance and also notified when the recording starts.
  • It is good practice to mute your microphone when you are not speaking to reduce the risk of audio disruption.
  • The meeting chat is often used for questions and for asking participants to introduce themselves at the beginning. However, if the person hosting the meeting does not have support from a co-host or assistant, it may be more practical to turn off the chat.
