People

People in the course navigation menu is the course participant list. This is where you can view the students and teachers enrolled in the course. It is also where students can be organized into groups. In Canvas, the People page shows everyone enrolled in the course and allows teachers to search, filter, and manage course users.

Please note: At the University of Iceland, students and teachers are added to Canvas automatically from Ugla based on course registration. Logging in to Canvas also goes through Ugla. This means that it is not possible to give someone access to a Canvas course without an HI email address.

What are differentiation tags used for?

Tagging students can be useful for course organization, teaching, and assignment management. Tags let you create student identifier sets that include selected students. The tags are hidden from students. Do not confuse them with course groups.

Examples of how tags can be used

  • Assigning content
You can assign assignments, quizzes, or pages to students with a specific tag by using Assign To in the settings for the assignment, quiz, or page.
  • Differentiated teaching
You can create student identifier sets based on learning needs or interests to support more personalized learning.
  • Extended quiz time
You can tag students who are entitled to extended time on quizzes.
  • Targeted communication
You can send messages to tagged student sets through the Canvas Inbox.
  • Filtering in the Gradebook
You can filter the traditional Gradebook to view and analyze the performance of specific tagged student sets.

How do I use differentiation tags?

To use tags, go to People in the course navigation. You can create tags either manually or by importing a CSV file.

Create and assign tags manually

  1. Open the course in Canvas.

  2. Select People in the course navigation.

  3. Click Manage Tags.

  4. In the side panel that opens, click Get Started.

Create and assign tags with a CSV file

  1. Open the course.

  2. Select People in the course navigation.

  3. Click Manage Tags.

  4. In the side panel, click Upload CSV.

  5. Click Download Template File to download the pre-formatted spreadsheet.

About the template file

The template is pre-filled with information for each student, including name, Canvas user ID, and login ID. You do not need to edit those columns.

You need to import the file into Excel, not open it as usual.

Import the template file into Excel

  1. Create a new empty file (Blank workbook).

  2. Select Get DataFrom Text/CSV.

  3. Select the downloaded template file, then click Import.

  4. Under File Origin, select Unicode (UTF-8), and under delimiter select Comma.

  5. Click Load.

Add tags to the file

  1. Enter the tag names you want to use in the tag_name column for the students who should receive the tag.

  2. Leave these columns blank: canvas_tag_id, tag_id, tag_set_name, canvas_tag_set_id, and tag_set_id.

  3. Save the file as CSV.

  4. Upload the file to Canvas to import the tags.

Observer

A teacher may sometimes need to give someone view-only access to a Canvas course. This can be done by assigning the role of Observer. At the University of Iceland, this must be arranged in Ugla.

An Observer can view course content, announcements, and discussions, but cannot participate in the course as a student or create or manage content as a teacher. Observers cannot access a course until it has been published.

At the University of Iceland, a person with observer access does not see the course in Ugla. Instead, they need to open Canvas directly, where the course appears on the Canvas Dashboard.
