Make-up and Deferred Exams

Assignments and quizzes in Canvas can be assigned only to the students who are expected to submit the assignment or take the quiz. When this is done, Gradebook calculations treat the other students as not required to complete it or receive a grade for it. In addition, the assignment or quiz is not visible to students who are not included in the assignment settings, either in the course or in the course calendar.

Setting Up a Deferred or Resit Exam

When setting up a deferred or resit exam, it is often easiest to copy the final exam, change the time settings, and adapt it as needed for the deferred or resit exam.

  1. Final exam copied
    1. Go to Assignments or Quizzes (as appropriate) in the course menu on the left.
    2. Click the options menu (three dots) at the end of the quiz row and choose Duplicate.

Note that if you are using the classic Canvas quiz engine, a copy is created as a new quiz, so it may be more suitable to set it up again from scratch rather than copy it.

      INSPERA
For deferred and resit exams in Inspera, a Canvas assignment is created to receive the grades. See more about this in the separate Inspera instructions on setting up the assignment that receives grades from Inspera and on Gradebook handling for deferred and resit exams.

  2. Open the quiz/assignment, and click Edit in the top right corner.
  3. Change whatever is needed in the quiz/assignment description and adjust the date and time settings, etc., for the deferred and resit exam.
Select the students who are taking the deferred or resit exam.

NOTE! If it is not yet clear which students will need to take the deferred or resit exam, this step may have to be done later, for example after students have taken the exam or when working with the Gradebook. However, it must be done so that the grade calculation is correct.

Under the Assign to section at the bottom of the page, remove Everyone, and instead select the names of the students who are to take (or have taken) the deferred or resit exam, and set the appropriate dates. If a student’s name does not appear in the name list, it may be necessary to enter the initial letters of the name to make it appear. Gradebook calculations must account for this so that other students are not expected to receive a grade for the quiz.

  4. Click Save & Publish. Canvas warns that not all students will receive the quiz. Click Continue.
  5. Go to Assignments in the course menu and place the deferred or resit exam in the same assignment group as the final exam, if it is not already there. See more about assignment groups and weighting in the relevant guide.
  6. If a student took the final exam and also received a grade for it, that grade must be marked as Excused in the Gradebook so that the grade for the deferred exam is used in the calculation of the student’s final grade. The same goes for students who reported illness and took the deferred exam.

Click in the student’s grade cell, click the small arrow that appears, and select Excused in the panel on the right.
