Get started with Canvas
This page is a good starting point for teachers who are new to Canvas. Here you will find the key steps to help you get your course started. Guides on specific tools and settings are available under Teachers in the top menu. You can also use the site search to find what you need faster.
Canvas is the University of Iceland’s learning management system. It is developed by Instructure and includes a wide range of tools that can support teaching, learning, communication, assignments, feedback, and assessment.
Canvas at the University of Iceland also includes several integrated tools, such as FeedbackFruits, which offers activities for peer review, group work, interactive assignments, and other forms of active learning.
A new Canvas course site is created for a course each academic year, or each time the course is taught. Older Canvas course sites remain accessible to students and teachers in Canvas.
After a course has ended, the course site becomes inactive. This means that users can usually view the content, but cannot participate in the course or make changes in the same way as during the teaching period.
Student and teacher enrolments are managed in Ugla. Users are transferred from Ugla to Canvas, so access to course sites is based on the information registered there.
Students enrolled in a course automatically get access to the Canvas course site once the teacher publishes the course.
Before students can see a Canvas course site, the teacher must publish it. It is also important to check that the relevant modules, pages, assignments, and other course items are published.
Teachers can use Student View to check what the course site looks like from a student’s perspective before the course begins.
Learning outcomes
Learning outcomes help clarify what students should be able to do at the end of a course. They guide assessment, teaching activities, and how you set up your course in Canvas.
Help with Learning Outcomes – an AI assistant that can help you draft, review, and connect learning outcomes to assessment.
