Downloading student submissions

As a precaution due to the cyberattack, teachers are advised to download student submissions as PDF files where possible.

Download a submission as a PDF

To download a student’s or group’s submission as a PDF, even if the original submission was in another file format:

  1. Open the assignment.
  2. Click SpeedGrader on the right-hand side.
  3. Select the student or group name.
  4. Click the Download icon in the upper-left corner of the document preview.
  5. Save the PDF file to your computer.

This option is available when the file can be displayed in Canvas DocViewer. Note that the Download button in the DocViewer toolbar downloads a PDF of the annotated submission. Files over 100 MB and password-protected files are not converted by DocViewer.

Download original submissions for all students

You can download all student submissions for an assignment at once, in the format in which they were submitted.

  1. Open the assignment.
  2. Click Download Submissions.
  3. Canvas downloads the submissions as a ZIP file.
  4. Extract the ZIP file, for example, by right-clicking the file and selecting Extract All.
  5. Open the extracted folder to view the submissions.

Note: If a student has submitted more than once, only the most recent submission is included. Bulk downloads can include file uploads, text entries, website URLs, and Google Docs submissions, but not media recording submissions.

Download one student's submission in the original format

To download a single student’s submission in the format in which it was submitted:

  1. Open the assignment.
  2. Click SpeedGrader on the right-hand side.
  3. Select the student.
  4. In the panel on the right, click the download icon next to the submitted file.
