Teacher Announcements and Messages
Announcements
Each Canvas course includes an announcements tool that allows teachers to send messages to students by email. Announcements are also stored in the course.
The course must be published before the first announcement is sent. Otherwise, students will not receive it by email. The announcements link is hidden from students until an announcement has been posted.
Announcements are usually sent by email immediately, but users can choose in their notification settings to receive course announcements right away, daily, weekly, or not at all.
Announcements include several options:
- Add attachments
- Allow students to comment
- Allow students to like an announcement
- Display an announcement during a selected time period
- Enable podcast feed
It is a good idea to review your own notification settings, for example, to check whether you receive email copies of announcements you send yourself.
Inbox
To send a message to one student or a group of students in a course, it is convenient to use the Inbox in Canvas. Many teachers use the Canvas messaging system instead of regular email to keep course communication in one place.
You can also send messages to students from the Gradebook, for example, to students who have not submitted an assignment.
